There are a couple of reasons that your newborn should not be sleeping completely through the night.

#1 Your newborn should be feeding at least every 4 hours, and potentially every 2 or 3 hours if she is a preemie. If you are breastfeeding, for your milk to supply alone you will want to feed every few hours.

#2 As your newborn has not yet developed a 24-hour newborn sleep pattern and he or she is not able to distinguish the difference night-time and day-time sleep. Night-time consolidated sleep likely won’t start the fall into place until 8 weeks or so.

#3 Your baby will fall asleep anywhere and everywhere.  The forty-five-minute awake window applies here so if you are expecting to be out and about for longer than an hour, you can count on your baby falling asleep everywhere and anywhere. While it might not be the most restful sleep, since there will likely be stimulating sights and sounds, there is no need to be home-bound for months simply because you have a newborn. Just make sure your baby still gets enough rest in a consistent environment that is conducive to a healthy newborn sleep pattern.

Newborn sleep pattern – Set up a routine

Setting up a newborn sleep pattern or routine will make your baby get used to sleeping at a certain time. These will include the following:

  1. 30 minutes bedtime routine
  2. Bathing
  3. Changing to sleep clothes
  4. Changing diapers
  5. Reading a book
  6. Singing lullabies
  7. Giving baby massage
  8. Dimming the light
  9. Setting the mood for sleep such as sleep music
  10. Darkening the room with black-out curtains

In practice, parents instructed to introduce bedtime routines have reported rapid improvements in sleep quality. There is also evidence that certain components of a routine, like an infant massage, may be effective in their own right. While every child is slightly different in terms of how much sleep they need, most require newborn sleep pattern the following to be fully rested:

Newborns (0-3 months)
Recommended: 14-17 hours
May be appropriate:
11-13 hours (Not less than 11 hours)
18-19 hours (Not more than 19 hours)
Infants (4-11 months)
Recommended: 12-15 hours
May be appropriate:
10-11 hours (Not less than 10 hours)
16-18 hours (Not more than 18 hours)
Toddlers (1-2 years)
Recommended: 11-14 hours
May be appropriate:
9-10 hours (Not less than 9 hours)
15-16 hours (Not more than 16 hours)
