Smart pillows – designed to track your sleep
These days, sleep monitors come in all shapes, sizes, from wearable to bedside pods. None of them are more interesting than those that rest below your head, however, today’s smart pillows are designed to track your sleeping habits, help you avoid snoring problems, and lull you to sleep with a range of sounds without disturbing the ones around you. Opting for a smart pillow is a no-brainer – it’s choosing the right model that is challenging.
Smart pillows – What to expect
Smart pillows come in different sizes, shapes, and features. Unlike other products, like toaster ovens and nose hair trimmers, smart pillows come in a variety of shapes and sizes. Some smart pillows are exactly what you’d expect, with built-in electronics, sleep trackers, bedside controllers, temperature control, and etc.
Smart pillows come with a handful of smart features. Some smart pillows are meant to:
- Deter snoring
- Sleep tracker
- Built-in speakers
- Alarm clocks
With these features included in smart pillows, how much should you expect to pay for it? Well, some smart pillows are expensive from $100 to $200 or more depending on the features that you are looking for.
Smart pillows – features to consider before buying a smart pillow
You are considering a smart pillow for a reason, this could be to listen to some calming sleep music or white noise. Smart pillows like Dreampad or ZEEQ offer an interesting solution to this problem; we will get back to that later on under the review part.
What you can use smart pillows for:
- Built-in speakers for your sleep music or movie night in bed
While smart pillows can be used to listen to music, some smart pillows can be connected to your smart TV where you can watch a movie at night quietly, but to get the most out of the movie audio you are better off with some earbuds. However, these built-in speakers can be used for both.
- Anti-snoring device
You might be wondering how a smart pillow can be used as an anti-snoring device. In most cases, snoring is caused by an obstructed airway. Maybe you are lying down funny, or maybe you just have too much tissue in your throat. Either way, when your airway is blocked, your throat and nose tissue vibrates, which creates the snoring sound.
Smart pillows can detect that you are snoring and prompt you to move your head using a small vibrating motor. Some smart pillows, like Goodnite Anti-Snore Solution, even have a built=in airbags that tilt your head without waking you up. So, the point is, if snoring is your main sleep problem, look for a smart pillow with an anti-snoring feature to help you get the rest you need.
- Sleep tracker
A smart pillow can improve the quality of your sleep by eliminating snoring and personalizing sleep playlists. But, like a smartwatch, a smart pillow can also track, record and rate your sleep quality. Naturally, these features usually work with Google Assistant and Alexa.
While this sounds a bit more convenient than wearing a sleep tracker in the form of a watch, bracelet, necklace or headband, it isn’t nearly as accurate. Smartwatches such as FitBit, track your sleep by monitoring your heart rate and your physical movements. Smart pillows, on the other hand, track sleep by checking for changes in weight distribution, or by listening to your breath with a microphone.
That being said, most smart pillows come with robust sleep tracking apps, and they can serve as a good alternative to smartwatch if you hate wearing jewelry in bed.
