Sleep disorders – What is sleep disorder?

Sleep disorders are conditions that almost half of the country’s population is most likely experiencing. We experience it but most likely are not aware that what we have is already a disorder.

Sleep disorders may vary in cause, symptom and treatment.

It is a condition that can bring a lot of trouble not just with respect to our sleeping and waking cycle but causes disruption to the rest of our lives as well. When we talk about sleep disorders we refer to factors or conditions that change the pattern, length of time and quality of one’s sleep. Sleep disorders may vary in cause, symptom, and treatment. One thing they all do have in common though is that they are not good for our health.

  1. Insomnia – this is a condition wherein a person finds himself/herself having difficulty in falling and staying asleep. This sleep disorder basically disrupts one’s sleeping and waking patterns, as well as affects much the quality and length a person experience. Also, this condition can be treated with natural sleep aids.
  2. Sleep apnea–  this is the type of sleep disorder that occurs when a person experiences abnormal patterns in breathing while they sleep.

  • Obstructive Sleep Apnea or (OSA)
  • Central sleep Apnea or (CSA)
  • Complex Sleep Apnea

It is important to know which type you have so that you can receive the appropriate treatment for the condition. The sad part about this is that it is believed that only ten percent who have this condition actually gets diagnose and therefor gets the proper treatment.

  • Restless legs syndrome (RLS) – also known as Willis-Ekbom disease is a type of sleep disorder wherein the person affected experience movement disorder. People with this condition undergo episodes where they have “restless legs”. This means that they feel an uncontrollable urge to move their legs as they try to sleep.  
  • Narcolepsy – this  sleep disorder is characterized by a feeling of extreme sleepiness during the day and often suddenly falling asleep at day time. It is a condition that can be quite uncomfortable as well as awkward especially for those who have school or day jobs.

There are many ways to help diagnose sleep disorders. Doctors can usually treat most sleep disorders effectively, which is provided these are diagnosed early and correctly. The problem though is that 90% percent of people afflicted with a condition does not bother to get themselves checked.

The most obvious and automatic effect of any sleep disorder would be the lack of sleep. For this reason, it would be good to know the primary effects of sleep lost to our daily life. And here are some of them.

  • Affects your memory and brain. This is very true. Studies show that not getting enough sleep impairs alertness, focus, capacity to reason and solve problems. In other words, the prolonged experience of this condition may lead to permanent effects on one’s cognitive and comprehension skills.
  • Heart diseases, failure, and attack. The body needs to rest and sleep to repair the damages caused to it during the day. The inability to sleep properly and with enough time for a prolonged period can make one vulnerable to health risks, like heart disease, failure, and attack; it can cause irregular heartbeat, high blood pressure, and diabetes to name a few. 
  • Weakens your immune system – When the immune system is t functioning properly, your body becomes susceptible to attack by viruses and bacteria. When you sleep your immune system releases proteins called cytokines and other infection-fighting antibodies that protect your body against infection or inflammation.

Sleep disorders are real concerns. Paying attention to the symptoms and having one properly diagnosed and treated is important. Caring about these conditions is a good thing not just for the one afflicted but to those around them.
